How to inspect and edit CSV without uploading a spreadsheet
Inspect a small spreadsheet export without opening a desktop application. Leading zeros stay intact because cells are stored as text rather than automatically converted to numbers.
- Import a CSV or paste its source, select the separator and choose whether it has headers.
- Open the table, search rows and choose a sort column.
- Click a cell, edit its content and save that cell.
- Choose spreadsheet-safety and UTF-8 options, then export the entire table or filtered sorted view.
When a browser CSV editor is the right choice
Many CSV files are exports from another system, such as an online store, a CRM or a bank portal. You often need to look at them, fix a few values and send them on. Opening them in a full spreadsheet program can quietly change the data, for example by turning a ZIP code like 07030 into 7030 or reformatting dates.
This editor helps in those moments. A store owner can correct a product name before re-importing an inventory file. An analyst can search a contact export for one company and download only those rows. A developer can check that a seed file has the expected columns before running a script.
The tool accepts files up to 2 MB with up to 20,000 data rows, 100 columns and 200,000 cells. It reads comma, semicolon, tab and pipe separated data, and an imported file has its separator detected automatically.
Worked example: a small order list
Select Load example to open a three-row table with the headers Product, Quantity and Price. The rows are Notebook 12 4.5, Pen 50 1.2 and Folder 8 3.
Choose Quantity as the sort column and Descending as the direction. With numeric-aware sorting on, the order becomes Pen (50), Notebook (12), Folder (8). Without numeric sorting, text comparison would place values by characters instead of by size.
Now open Column statistics. For Quantity you will see 0 empty cells, 3 unique values, 3 numbers, a minimum of 8, a maximum of 50 and a sum of 70. For Price the minimum is 1.2, the maximum is 4.5 and the sum is 8.7. Type Pen in the search box and the status line reads 1 matching rows of 3. Download filtered / sorted CSV would then export the header plus that single row.
How searching, sorting and exporting work
Search is a case-insensitive match across every column, so typing note finds Notebook. Sorting keeps ties in their original order, which makes results predictable when many rows share a value. The table shows 50 rows per page, but filtered exports always include every matching row.
Column statistics always describe the entire table, not just the current search. A cell counts as a number only when the whole value is numeric, so 4.5 counts but 4.5 kg does not.
On export, cells that contain the separator, a quote mark or a line break are wrapped in double quotes, and inner quotes are doubled, following the common CSV convention. Rows are joined with Windows-style line endings, which most spreadsheet apps read without trouble. The optional UTF-8 BOM helps some spreadsheet programs show accented characters correctly.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not forget to select Save cell. A value typed into the edit box is not part of the table, and is not exported, until you save it. If you change your mind about several edits, Undo all cell edits restores the table as it was first opened.
Watch the spreadsheet-safety option with numeric data. It adds an apostrophe to any value that starts with an equals sign, plus sign, minus sign or at sign, so a negative number like -5 is exported as '-5. Turn the option off when the file goes to a database or script rather than a spreadsheet.
Finally, check the separator before you open the table. Pasted text uses the separator you select, and a wrong choice puts every value of a row into one column.
Useful tips and limitations
- Quoted multiline cells are supported. Review warnings about rows padded with empty cells.
- Spreadsheet-safety prefixes change exported formula-like values. Disable that option only when original text is required.
- Untick First row contains headers when your file has no header line, and the columns will be labeled Column 1, Column 2 and so on.
- Use the Unique count in column statistics to spot an ID column that contains duplicates.
Common questions
Does the CSV editor preserve leading zeros?
Yes. Cell values remain strings, so values such as 00123 are retained.
Does filtered CSV export include only the visible page?
No. It includes every matching row in the selected sort order, not just the current preview page.
Can I change the separator when exporting?
Yes. The selected delimiter is also used for export, so you can open a comma file, switch the option to semicolon and download a semicolon-separated copy.
Why does a cell show (empty)?
The cell has no value. Short rows are padded with empty cells so every row has the same number of columns, and the tool shows a note when that happens.
Is there a size limit for pasted CSV?
Yes. The source box accepts about 2 million characters, and the table limits of 20,000 data rows, 100 columns and 200,000 cells still apply.
CSV import, editing and downloads happen on your device. The application does not save your table between visits.
