How to find the score you need on your final exam

Enter your current grade, the grade you want and how much the final is worth. The calculator shows the score you need and what your overall grade would be for a range of final exam results.

  1. Enter your current grade in the class before the final.
  2. Enter the overall grade you want, or tap a letter goal button.
  3. Enter the final exam's weight as a percentage of the course grade.
  4. Read the score you need on the final.
  5. Check the table to see your overall grade and letter for each final score.

When to use a final grade calculator

Near the end of a term, the most useful question is simple: what do I need on the final? Knowing the answer helps you plan study time across several exams. If you need 68 percent in one class and 95 percent in another, you know where your effort will matter most.

The outcome table answers the follow-up questions too. What happens if the exam goes badly? What is the best grade I can still get? Seeing every result from 0 to 100 percent makes the stakes clear and can take some of the stress out of exam week.

It also helps when you are choosing between goals. If an A is out of reach but a B plus needs only a modest score, you can set a realistic target, plan your review around it, and spend the remaining time on courses where the final can change your letter.

Worked example: a final worth 25 percent

Say your current grade is 84 percent and the final is worth 25 percent of the course. To finish with 85 percent you need (85 minus 84 times 0.75) divided by 0.25, which is 88 percent on the final. To finish with 80 percent you need only 68 percent.

If you aim for 90 percent, the calculator shows you need 108 percent, which is out of reach without extra credit. The table makes the limits clear: a perfect 100 percent gives an overall 88 percent, a B plus on the default scale. A final of 80 percent gives 83 percent, a B, and 60 percent gives 78 percent, a C plus. Even 0 percent on the final leaves you with 63 percent, a D.

How the required score is calculated

Your course grade is a weighted mix of the work before the final and the final itself. With the final weight written as a decimal w, the overall grade equals current grade times (1 minus w) plus final score times w. Solving for the final score gives required score equals (desired grade minus current grade times (1 minus w)) divided by w.

The table uses the first formula for final scores from 100 percent down to 0 percent and looks up the letter for each overall grade on your scale. Rows that reach your goal are shown in full color.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is using a current grade that already includes a zero for the final. Many grade portals count missing work as zero, which makes your grade look far lower. Use the grade on completed work only, or work it out with the grade calculator.

Another mistake is ignoring how the final's weight is defined. Some courses replace a low midterm with the final score or drop the lowest quiz, which this simple formula does not model. Your teacher's grading and rounding policy decides the official grade, so treat the result as a planning estimate.

Useful tips and limitations

  • Use the grade calculator first if you are not sure of your exact current grade.
  • Check your syllabus for the final's weight; even a few points of difference changes the score you need.
  • Set the goal to the minimum percentage for the letter you want, not a rounded guess.
  • Copy the results to keep the outcome table handy while you plan your study schedule.

Common questions

What if the final grade calculator says I need more than 100 percent?

Your goal cannot be reached with a normal final exam score. The table shows the best overall grade you can still get, which is what you would earn with 100 percent.

What does a negative result mean in the final grade calculator?

You will reach your goal even with 0 percent on the final, so the calculator says you keep that grade regardless of the exam.

Can I change the letter grades in the final grade calculator?

Yes. Open the letter scale editor to set your school's cutoffs. The goal buttons and the table use the scale you set.

Does the final grade calculator work if the final is worth 100 percent?

Yes. With a weight of 100 percent your overall grade equals your final exam score, so the required score is simply the grade you want.

Can the final grade calculator handle a final worth points instead of a percentage?

Convert it first. Divide the final's points by the total course points and multiply by 100 to get its weight as a percentage.

Why is my final grade calculator result different from my teacher's?

Teachers may round, drop scores, curve the exam or weight categories differently. The calculator uses the simple weighted formula with the numbers you enter.
