How to convert HEIC photos to JPG without uploading them
Use this converter when a form or image editor cannot open your iPhone photo. It exports the primary still image and lets you review the result before saving.
- Choose up to ten HEIC or HEIF files within the size limits.
- Choose JPG, PNG or WebP and set quality, maximum width or rotation.
- Convert the photos locally and compare each preview with the original photo.
- Download individual images or save the complete ZIP batch.
When an HEIC converter saves the day
iPhones save photos in the HEIC format by default because it keeps good quality at a small file size. The trouble starts when you leave the Apple world. A job portal may only accept JPG uploads, an older Windows editor may refuse to open the file, or a print shop may ask for a standard format.
This converter helps in those moments. A real estate agent can turn ten listing photos into web-ready JPGs before posting them. A parent can resize school event pictures so they fit an email attachment limit. A small shop owner can create WebP versions of product shots for a faster online store.
Because decoding happens in your browser, it also suits photos you would rather not send to an unknown server, such as pictures of documents, receipts or your home.
A worked example: resizing a typical iPhone photo
Say you add a photo named IMG_0001.HEIC that measures 4032 by 3024 pixels. That is about 12.2 million pixels, well under the 24 million pixel limit per photo. You choose JPG, leave quality at 90 percent, type 1600 as the maximum width and keep rotation at 0 degrees.
The tool scales the image by 1600 divided by 4032, which is about 0.397. The new height is 3024 times that factor, which rounds to 1200. The result is a 1600 by 1200 JPG saved as 01-IMG_0001.jpg. The number at the front shows its position in the batch.
If you had picked 90 degrees of rotation, the width and height would swap and the file would come out at 1200 by 1600. The result card shows the final dimensions and the original and new file sizes, so you can confirm the change before downloading.
How the conversion works
An HEIC file is a container that can hold several images, such as a main photo, thumbnails and depth information. The tool checks that the file really is a HEIF container, decodes the first image with a browser-based HEIF decoder and draws it onto a canvas. It then encodes that canvas as JPG, PNG or WebP.
The maximum width setting only shrinks images. A value of 0, or a value larger than the photo, keeps the original size, so the tool never enlarges a picture. JPG has no transparency, so the tool first fills the canvas with the JPEG background color you choose. The quality slider runs from 10 to 100 percent and applies to JPG and WebP only.
Photos are converted one after another rather than all at once. This keeps memory use lower on phones and older laptops, and you can cancel a batch at any point.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not delete the original HEIC files after converting. The exported image does not carry over extra frames, depth maps, Live Photo video or HDR data, so the original remains your full-quality master.
Avoid setting quality very low just to save space. Below about 60 percent, JPG and WebP images often show blocky patches in skies and skin tones. Reducing the maximum width usually saves more space with less visible loss.
Finally, check each preview before saving. If a photo looks sideways, apply a rotation and convert again rather than fixing it later in another app.
Useful tips and limitations
- The primary still image is exported; Live Photo video, depth data and HDR are not preserved.
- Quality affects JPG and WebP; PNG exports use lossless compression of the decoded image.
- If a WebP export fails in your browser, choose PNG or JPG instead, since WebP encoding support varies between browsers.
- Add photos in the order you want them numbered, because the output names start with 01, 02 and so on in that order.
Common questions
Can I convert several HEIC photos together here?
Yes. Choose up to ten files, at most 25 MB each and 80 MB total. Photos are processed sequentially to reduce memory use.
Does HEIC conversion retain every image and camera tag?
No. This tool exports the primary decoded still image. Check orientation and colors, and keep the original if you need its metadata or additional frames.
Will the converter make my small HEIC photo larger?
No. The maximum width setting only reduces size. If you enter a width bigger than the photo, the original dimensions are kept.
Why does my PNG file end up larger than the HEIC original?
PNG uses lossless compression, so it stores every decoded pixel. HEIC uses much more efficient lossy compression, so a PNG of the same photo is often several times bigger.
What does the JPEG background color do?
JPG cannot store transparency. Any transparent area is filled with the color you pick, which is white by default.
HEIC files are decoded locally. The decoder loads from this website; your photos are not uploaded.
