How to use the camera / webcam test

Preview a webcam locally, choose a camera and preferred resolution, inspect actual settings and save a PNG snapshot with optional mirroring.

  1. Select Start camera and allow the browser to access your webcam. The microphone is not requested.
  2. Inspect the live preview and actual browser-reported resolution settings.
  3. Stop and choose another listed camera or preferred width, then start again.
  4. Optionally mirror the image and download a PNG snapshot, then stop the camera.

When a quick webcam check saves time

A camera that fails at the start of an interview, a class or a client call is stressful. This test lets you confirm that your browser can see the camera, that the right device is selected and that the picture looks the way you expect, all before anyone else is watching.

It is also useful after plugging in a new USB webcam, when a laptop has both a built-in camera and an external one, or when a video app shows a black screen and you want to know whether the problem is the camera or the app. Because only video is requested, you can test the picture without granting microphone access.

Worked example: requesting full HD from a webcam

Suppose you choose 1920px in the Preferred width menu and select Start camera. The tool asks the browser for an ideal width of 1920 and an ideal height of 1920 times 9 divided by 16, which is 1080. The other options work the same way: 640 requests 640 by 360, 1280 requests 1280 by 720, and 3840 requests 3840 by 2160.

If your webcam tops out at 720p, the browser may still open it at 1280 by 720. The settings panel below the preview will then show width 1280 and height 720, together with values such as frame rate, aspect ratio and the device ID the browser reports. Select Download snapshot and you receive a file named camera-test.png at that same 1280 by 720 size, which is 921,600 pixels.

Reading the settings panel

The settings list comes straight from the browser's report for the active video track. It shows what the camera is actually delivering, not what was requested. That makes it the most reliable place to check resolution and frame rate when a meeting app does not show these numbers.

The exact fields vary by browser and device. Width, height and frame rate appear on most systems. Phones may also show which way the camera faces. When no camera is chosen, the tool asks for the front-facing or user camera by default, which is usually the one above a laptop screen or on the front of a phone.

The snapshot is drawn from the live video frame at its native size and saved as a lossless PNG, so it is a fair sample of focus, exposure and color.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not expect the camera menu to show real device names right away. Browsers often hide names until you grant permission once, so start the camera first, stop it, and the list will fill in.

Do not try to switch cameras or resolutions while the preview is running. The menus are locked during capture, so select Stop camera, change the option and start again. If the preview stays black, close other apps that might be holding the camera, check the browser's site permission and look for a physical privacy shutter.

Finally, remember that mirroring flips the saved snapshot too. Leave it off if text or logos in the frame need to read correctly.

Useful tips and limitations

  • Requested resolution is a preference; hardware may supply a different size.
  • Device names may appear only after permission is granted.
  • Test in the same browser you will use for your call, since camera permission is granted per browser and per site.
  • Compare the frame rate in the settings panel under room light and under a desk lamp, because many webcams lower frame rate in dim light.

Common questions

Can the webcam tester switch between cameras?

Yes. After the initial permission grant, stop the camera, choose a listed input and start again. Available cameras depend on the browser.

Does the webcam snapshot use the mirror setting?

Yes. The mirror setting affects both the preview and the downloaded PNG snapshot.

Why does the settings panel show a lower resolution than I chose?

The chosen width is only a preference. The browser picks the closest mode the camera and driver support, and the panel shows that actual result.

Does the camera test record video?

No. It shows a live preview and lets you save a single PNG snapshot. Nothing is recorded unless you choose to download a snapshot.

Which camera is used if I leave the menu on Default camera?

The tool asks the browser for the user-facing camera. On most laptops that is the built-in camera, and on phones it is the front camera.

Device checks and recordings run locally without AI or media uploads. Permission is requested only when starting capture. Download anything you want to keep before leaving the page.
