Who this marketplace fee calculator helps
This calculator is for sellers who want to know what is left after a marketplace takes its share. An Etsy maker can check whether a new product still earns a fair amount once listing, transaction and payment fees come out. An Amazon FBA seller can combine referral fees with fulfillment and storage charges to see real profit per order.
It is useful before launching a product, when testing a discount, or when deciding whether ads are worth it. Because every rate is editable, you can model your country, your category and the fees on your own statement rather than a generic guess.
The tool gives an estimate based on your inputs. For tax treatment or major pricing decisions, check with an accountant who knows your business.
Worked example for an Etsy order
Suppose you sell one item for 40 dollars and charge 6 dollars for shipping. The product costs you 12 dollars, real postage is 5 dollars and packaging is 1 dollar. You expect 100 orders a month and pay 200 dollars a month in fixed costs. For this example, assume your rates are a 6.5% platform fee, 3% plus 0.25 dollars for payment processing and 0.20 dollars per listing. These are sample figures, not official Etsy pricing.
Order revenue is 40 + 6 = 46 dollars. The platform fee base includes shipping by default, so it is 46 x 6.5% = 2.99 dollars. Payment processing is 46 x 3% + 0.25 = 1.63 dollars. With the 0.20 dollar listing fee, total fees are 4.82 dollars.
Net profit per order is 46 - 12 - (5 + 1) - 4.82 - (200 / 100) = 21.18 dollars. The net profit margin is 21.18 / 46 = 46.0%, and estimated monthly profit is 21.18 x 100 = 2,118 dollars.
How the calculation works
Revenue is the discounted merchandise price times quantity, plus shipping charged to the customer. Tax you collect is treated as pass-through and kept out of revenue. Net profit then subtracts product cost, all fees, delivery, packaging, ads, fulfillment, storage, other costs and a share of monthly overhead divided by expected orders.
The platform or referral fee is the larger of your percentage and the minimum fee per order. Checkboxes decide whether that percentage applies to shipping and to collected tax, and whether payment processing includes tax. Payment processing always includes shipping.
The fields change with the marketplace. Etsy shows payment processing and an additional transaction or offsite advertising percentage. Amazon FBA instead shows a referral minimum, fulfillment and inbound cost per unit and allocated storage per unit. Switching marketplace clears the inputs.
Common mistakes to avoid
Counting a cost twice is easy. If your Amazon fulfillment fee already covers delivery to the buyer, leave Actual delivery cost per order at zero for FBA orders. Likewise, if you put a fee into other costs, set its rate field to zero.
Another mistake is relying on the illustrative example. Its rates are fictional and only show how the controls work. Enter rates from your own fee schedule or recent statements. Also remember that FBA fulfillment is not calculated from size or weight here, so copy the per-unit figure from your Amazon estimate. Returns, refunds and currency conversion belong in other costs.
Useful tips and limitations
- Use consistent per-unit and per-order amounts. Avoid counting a cost twice.
- Review the assumptions before making a pricing decision; actual charges can differ from your inputs.
- Run the numbers once with a typical discount applied, since the percentage fees shrink but your fixed costs per order do not.
- Download a report for each product version so you can compare pricing options side by side later.
Common questions
Does the Etsy and Amazon calculator combine both marketplaces?
No. Select one marketplace. Switching resets the inputs so fees from the previous marketplace are not mixed into the new estimate. Enter the rates and fee bases that apply to your country and product.
Does this FBA estimate calculate fees from package dimensions?
No. Enter fulfillment, inbound and allocated storage charges from your actual Amazon estimate. Category referral minimums and per-unit costs are editable; special tiers and returns belong in other costs.
How do I include Etsy offsite ads in the estimate?
Enter the rate in Additional transaction / offsite advertising %. It uses the same fee base as the platform percentage, so check the shipping and tax boxes to match how the fee is charged.
What does the minimum referral fee do?
For Amazon FBA, the platform fee becomes whichever is larger: your percentage of the fee base or the minimum per order you enter.
Can I model an Etsy or Amazon order with several units?
Yes. Set Units per order. Product cost, listing fees, fulfillment and storage scale with units, while delivery and packaging stay per order.
