How to use the shopify profit & fee calculator

Estimate Shopify order profit after product costs, gateway fees, shipping, ads and allocated overhead. No signup required.

  1. Open the Shopify Profit & Fee Calculator and select the currency used for all your inputs. Currency changes only the display; it does not convert amounts.
  2. Enter your real selling costs and any percentage rates. Load illustrative example only to learn the controls; its rates are not provider pricing.
  3. Adjust your prices, costs and profit targets to compare the live estimate. Review the formula and any undefined or unattainable results.
  4. Select Copy results or Download report to keep the inputs and calculation. Your entries are not saved when you leave the page.

When this estimate helps a store owner

Revenue on a dashboard can look healthy while profit quietly disappears into fees, shipping and ad spend. This calculator puts every cost for a single order in one place so you can see what is left. It suits new store owners setting first prices, established sellers testing a discount, and anyone deciding whether a product can carry paid advertising.

You can model a multi-unit order, a merchandise discount, shipping charged to the customer, pass-through tax, payment processing, a platform percentage with an optional minimum, an optional third-party transaction fee, per-unit fees, fulfillment, storage, packaging, ads and a share of monthly overhead. All fee rates start at zero, so the result reflects only the rates you enter.

A worked example with sample numbers

Take an order of 2 units at 40 each with a 10 percent discount, so merchandise is 72.00. The customer pays 6.00 shipping and 6.24 tax. Order revenue, which excludes tax, is 72.00 + 6.00 = 78.00. These rates are illustrative only; use your own plan and gateway pricing.

Assume a payment rate of 2.9 percent plus 0.30, with the payment base including collected tax (the default). The base is 78.00 + 6.24 = 84.24, so payment processing is 84.24 x 0.029 + 0.30 = 2.74. Product cost is 12 per unit, or 24.00. Delivery is 7.00, packaging 1.50 and ads 8.00. Monthly overhead of 39 spread over 150 orders adds 0.26 per order.

Net profit per order is 78.00 - 24.00 - 16.50 - 2.74 - 0.26 = 34.50. Net margin is 34.50 / 78.00, or about 44.23 percent, and estimated monthly profit is 34.497 x 150 = about 5,174.56.

How the calculation is built

Merchandise equals price times units times one minus the discount rate. Revenue adds shipping collected. The platform fee is the platform percentage of its base, or the minimum fee if that is higher. Payment processing is the payment percentage of revenue, plus tax when that box is ticked, plus the fixed fee. The additional transaction percentage is applied only when the third-party fee box is enabled.

Net profit equals revenue minus product costs, all fees, delivery, packaging, ads, fulfillment, storage, other costs and overhead divided by monthly orders. Margin shows as undefined when revenue is zero.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common error is double counting. If your delivery cost already includes packaging, leave packaging at zero. If your ad figure is a monthly budget, divide it by orders before entering it, or put it in monthly overhead instead.

Another mistake is treating collected tax as income. Tax is excluded from revenue here because it is passed on to the authorities. Finally, check fee bases carefully, and confirm real rates on your provider's billing pages before setting prices. For tax or accounting decisions, an accountant can review your assumptions.

Useful tips and limitations

  • Use consistent per-unit and per-order amounts. Avoid counting a cost twice.
  • Review the assumptions before making a pricing decision; actual charges can differ from your inputs.
  • Enter a realistic advertising cost per order, such as last month's ad spend divided by orders, to see whether a product can support paid traffic.
  • Try the same order with and without a discount to see how many percentage points of margin the promotion really costs.

Common questions

Are the Shopify fee rates automatically current?

No. Rates start at zero. Enter your actual Shopify plan, payment gateway and third-party transaction rates. The example uses fictional fees, and Shopify Payments and external gateways may have different charges.

How does the Shopify estimate treat collected tax?

Collected tax is excluded from order revenue. The fee-base checkboxes determine whether tax is included when calculating platform and payment fees. Enter taxes charged on fees under other costs.

Does the minimum platform fee apply to every order?

When you enter a minimum, the platform fee is the larger of the percentage amount and that minimum, so low-value orders are charged at least the minimum.

How is monthly overhead turned into a per-order cost?

The calculator divides your monthly fixed overhead or subscription by the expected monthly orders you enter and subtracts that share from each order's profit.

Can I model an order with several units?

Yes. Units per order multiplies the selling price, product cost, per-unit listing fees, fulfillment and storage, while per-order costs such as delivery and packaging are counted once.
