How to combine photos into a grid or freeform collage
Combine two to nine images in a grid or freeform layout. Adjust spacing, crop positions, rounded frames and captions, then preview and export your collage privately.
- Add two to nine images, drop files onto the preview area or load the three generated examples.
- Choose a grid, row, column, hero or freeform layout. Set output size, spacing, corner radius and background.
- Select a photo to adjust fill/fit, zoom, crop position, rotation or caption. Reorder photos; in freeform mode, drag frames or set their size and position.
- Choose PNG, JPEG or WebP and wait for the updated file size before downloading the collage.
Good uses for a quick photo collage
A collage tells a short story in one image. You might combine before and after photos of a room, four product angles for an online listing, a recap of a weekend trip, or a team photo wall for a newsletter.
Preset sizes make common formats easy. Choose 1080 by 1080 for a square social post, 1080 by 1920 for a vertical story, 1920 by 1080 for a widescreen slide or 1600 by 1200 for a general landscape image. You can also type any width and height.
Six layouts are available: Balanced grid, Two columns, One row, One column, One large plus stacked photos, and Freeform layers. Each photo can have a caption of up to 60 characters.
Worked example: a square grid and a hero layout
Set the size to 1080 by 1080, add four photos and keep Balanced grid with a 16-pixel gap and 24-pixel outer padding. The grid uses the square root of the photo count, rounded up, for its columns, so four photos make two columns and two rows. Each frame is (1080 minus 2 times 24 minus 16) divided by 2, which equals 508 pixels wide and 508 pixels tall.
Now switch to 1600 by 1200 and choose One large plus stacked photos with the same spacing and four photos. The large frame on the left is (1600 minus 48 minus 16) divided by 2, or 768 pixels wide, and 1200 minus 48, or 1152 pixels tall. The other three photos stack on the right, each 768 pixels wide and (1200 minus 48 minus 32) divided by 3, about 373 pixels tall.
If you add a caption to a 508-pixel frame, its text size is the frame width divided by 15, about 34 pixels, shown in white on a dark strip at the bottom of the frame.
How frames, cropping and export work
Fill frame scales a photo until it covers the whole frame, so some edges are cropped. Fit whole image keeps the entire photo visible and may leave background space. Zoom goes from 100 to 400 percent, and the horizontal and vertical crop sliders move the visible part of the photo inside its frame. A rotate button turns the selected photo in 90-degree steps.
The corner radius slider rounds every frame from 0 to 50 percent. In freeform mode, positions and sizes are percentages of the canvas, so a frame set to 30 percent width on a 1600-pixel canvas is 480 pixels wide.
Export options are PNG, which is lossless and keeps transparency, WebP, which is lossy and keeps transparency, and JPEG, which uses a solid matte color behind any transparent area. Everything is drawn on a canvas in your browser.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not pick a layout that fights your photo shapes. Tall portrait photos in One row on a wide canvas will be cropped heavily in Fill mode. Try Two columns or Fit whole image instead.
Avoid adding very large originals when you plan to use all nine slots. The combined source limit is 24 million pixels, so resize big camera files first.
Keep captions short and check them in the preview. Long text is squeezed to fit the frame width and can become hard to read. Also remember that the Gap and Padding sliders only apply to the fixed layouts, not to freeform layers.
Useful tips and limitations
- The combined source pixel budget is 24 megapixels. Resize very large originals before combining many photos.
- Freeform layers can overlap or extend beyond the canvas. Only the visible canvas area is exported.
- Turn on Transparent collage background and export PNG or WebP when you want rounded frames to sit on a page with its own background color.
- Use Move earlier and Move later to change which photo takes the large frame in the hero layout.
Common questions
How many photos can I put in this local collage maker?
Use two to nine images, with up to 12 megapixels per image and a combined 24-megapixel source budget. The exported canvas supports up to 12 megapixels.
Can I position collage photos freely instead of using a grid?
Yes. Select Freeform layers, then drag a frame or adjust its left, top, width and height controls. Reordering changes the layer order.
Why is part of a collage photo cropped?
Fill frame uses cover scaling, which can crop edges. Choose Fit whole image to retain the entire photo, or change zoom and crop-position controls.
Which photo goes in the large frame of the hero layout?
The first photo in the order gets the large frame. Use the move buttons to change the order.
What happens if I choose the hero layout with only two photos?
The large plus stacked layout needs at least three photos. With two, the tool arranges them as a balanced grid.
Can I adjust the export quality?
Yes. An export quality setting is available for the lossy formats, and the tool shows the resulting file size before you download.
