How to convert a JPG image to PNG
Save a JPG as a lossless PNG for editing, for sites that require PNG or before adding transparency. Compare the two file sizes before you download.
- Choose a JPG or JPEG image up to 32 MB.
- The PNG is created automatically. There is no quality slider, because PNG is lossless.
- Optionally enter a Max width to reduce the pixel size. Use 0 or the original width to keep it.
- Compare the original and PNG panels, including the size badge.
- Select Download image. The PNG keeps your file name, such as photo.png.
When to convert JPG to PNG
Some print services, design tools and website builders ask for PNG files. PNG is also the better working format when you plan several rounds of edits, because every save is lossless and does not add new artifacts the way repeated JPG saves do.
Converting is also the first step before making a transparent image, since JPG cannot hold transparency. For simply sharing a photo, though, a JPG is already the smaller and more widely accepted choice, so convert only when something specifically needs PNG.
A third reason is consistency. If a project already stores its graphics as PNG, such as a set of product images or slide assets, converting the odd JPG keeps every file in the same format and avoids surprises in tools that treat formats differently.
Worked example: a 6-megapixel photo
Suppose photo.jpg is 3000 by 2000 pixels and 2,000,000 bytes. After conversion, say the PNG is 7,800,000 bytes. The badge works out (2,000,000 - 7,800,000) / 2,000,000 x 100 = -290.0, which it shows as 290.0% larger. The size readout shows 7.44 MB because it divides by 1,024 at each step.
If the PNG is too heavy for your use, entering 1500 in Max width halves both sides to 1500 by 1000 pixels, a quarter of the pixels, which usually brings the file down a lot. A simple graphic saved as JPG, such as a chart with flat colors, can grow far less, because PNG compresses large areas of one color very efficiently.
How the conversion works
Your browser decodes the JPG and draws its pixels onto a canvas. Two lossless PNG encodes are then made: the browser's own and an optimized one from the dedicated OxiPNG encoder. Both describe exactly the same pixels, and the smaller file is kept. That is why the quality slider and presets do not apply on this page.
The conversion cannot remove JPG artifacts or restore detail; it preserves the image exactly as decoded. Camera metadata such as the date and location is not copied into the PNG. Everything happens on your device.
OxiPNG searches for a more compact way to store the same pixels, for example by choosing better filters for each row before compression. That search takes longer than a normal save, so the result panel shows Updating preview until it finishes.
Common mistakes to avoid
The biggest misconception is that PNG will make a blurry or blocky JPG look better. It will not; the PNG is a faithful copy of what is already there. If you have the original high-quality file, convert from that instead.
Another mistake is converting photos to PNG to save space, which almost always does the opposite. Check the badge, and if the size matters more than lossless editing, keep the JPG or use Convert to WebP. Finally, very large images can take a few seconds to optimize, so wait for the Ready to save label before downloading.
Useful tips and limitations
- Expect the PNG to be larger than the JPG for photos. The badge shows by how much.
- Use the Background Remover after converting if you want a transparent background.
- Reduce Max width when you only need the PNG for a web page or a slide; fewer pixels means a much smaller PNG.
- Keep the original JPG as well, since it is the smaller file for sharing.
Common questions
Does JPG to PNG improve image quality?
No. It stores the JPG pixels exactly, including any compression artifacts, but it does not add detail. Later edits saved as PNG lose nothing more.
Why is the file from JPG to PNG so much bigger?
PNG keeps every pixel exactly, while JPG discards detail to save space. Photos therefore usually grow, often to several times their JPG size.
Does JPG to PNG make the background transparent?
No. JPG has no transparency, so the PNG is fully opaque. Use the Background Remover afterward to cut out a background.
Is JPG to PNG free and private?
Yes. It is free with no signup, and the image is converted in your browser without being uploaded.
Can JPG to PNG convert several images at once?
No. It converts one image at a time. Select Change image to load the next one.
What is the largest image JPG to PNG can convert?
Images up to 32 MB, 16,384 pixels on a side and 40 million pixels in total.
