How to convert a WebP image to JPG
Change a WebP picture saved from a website into a JPG that older apps, printers and upload forms accept. Pick the quality and compare sizes before you download.
- Choose a WebP image up to 32 MB.
- Pick a quality preset or move the slider. More detail (90%) is a good choice to avoid adding visible artifacts.
- Optionally set a Max width to reduce the pixel size.
- Compare the WebP and JPG panels and check the size badge.
- Select Download image. The JPG keeps your file name, such as banner.jpg.
When to convert WebP to JPG
Many websites now serve images as WebP because the files are small. When you save one of those images, you get a .webp file that some older photo viewers, office programs, print kiosks and upload forms will not open. Converting to JPG gives you a file that practically every device and service understands.
It is also useful when a tool only accepts JPG, such as some marketplace listings, document templates or email systems that show attachments as previews. Only convert images you have the right to use; saving a picture from a website does not grant permission to reuse it.
Worked example: a website banner
Suppose banner.webp is 1600 by 900 pixels and 120,000 bytes. At More detail, say the JPG comes out at 260,000 bytes. The badge shows (120,000 - 260,000) / 120,000 x 100 = -116.7, displayed as 116.7% larger, and the readout shows 253.91 KB. At Balanced, say the JPG is 150,000 bytes, which is 25.0% larger.
Both results are normal, because WebP is the more efficient format. If you need the JPG under a limit such as 200 KB, lower the quality or enter 1200 in Max width, which makes the image 1200 by 675 pixels, and watch the size readout update.
How the conversion works
Your browser decodes the WebP, so it must support WebP; current versions of the major browsers do. The image is drawn onto a canvas filled with white, then encoded both by the browser and by the dedicated MozJPEG encoder at your chosen quality. The smaller valid JPG is kept for the preview and the download.
A lossy WebP has already discarded some detail, and JPG encoding discards a little more in a different way. A higher quality setting keeps this second loss small. Metadata is not copied into the JPG, and no part of the image leaves your device.
If you also set a Max width, the image is scaled down with high-quality smoothing before encoding. The proportions stay the same, and the width is never increased beyond the original, so a small image is converted at its own size.
Common mistakes to avoid
Choosing a low quality is the most common error. Because the picture has already been compressed once, a low JPG quality stacks a second set of artifacts on top, which shows as blockiness around edges and text. Start at More detail and lower it only as far as you need.
Another is converting logos or stickers with transparent backgrounds, which gain a white box in JPG. Finally, if the file you received has a .webp name but will not open, it may not actually be a WebP image; the converter shows an error rather than producing a broken file. Try opening it in the Image Compressor, which accepts any image your browser can read.
Useful tips and limitations
- Expect the JPG to be the same size or larger than the WebP; WebP usually compresses more efficiently.
- Animated WebP files convert to a single still image.
- If you want a smaller file instead of a more compatible one, keep the WebP.
- For photos from an iPhone in HEIC format, use HEIC to JPG instead.
Common questions
Why is the file from WebP to JPG larger than the WebP?
WebP usually stores the same picture in fewer bytes than JPG, so the JPG is often larger at a similar quality. Lower the quality or Max width if size matters.
Does WebP to JPG keep transparency?
No. JPG cannot be transparent, so transparent areas become white. Use a PNG workflow if you need transparency.
Can WebP to JPG convert animated WebP files?
It converts only a still frame. Animation is not kept, because JPG holds a single image.
Does WebP to JPG work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in mobile browsers that can read WebP. Large images may take a few seconds to encode on older phones.
Is WebP to JPG private?
Yes. The image is decoded and encoded in your browser and is not uploaded. The encoder files load from this website.
Can WebP to JPG resize the image too?
Yes. Enter a Max width to make it smaller while keeping the proportions. It does not enlarge images; use Resize Image for that.
