How to make a meme with your own picture
Upload your own image or start from a blank square, type top and bottom captions in bold outlined capitals and drag extra text boxes anywhere. Download the finished meme as a JPG or PNG.
- Choose or drop your image, or start with a blank white or black square.
- Type the top and bottom text. Captions wrap automatically to fit the width.
- Select a caption to change its size, text color, outline color and capitals setting, and add up to six more text boxes.
- Drag any caption on the preview to move it, or focus the preview and use the arrow keys to nudge the selected text.
- Choose JPG or PNG, adjust JPG quality if needed and download the meme.
When to use a meme generator
Memes are a quick way to share a joke, react to news in a group chat or make a team update a little lighter. The classic format is simple: a picture with bold white capitals at the top and bottom, outlined in black so they can be read on any background.
This tool works with your own images, such as a pet photo, a screenshot from your own project or a picture from a team event. It is also useful outside humor, for example adding a big readable label to a slide image or captioning a product photo for a social post.
Extra text boxes let you go beyond top and bottom text, for labeling several people or objects in one picture.
Worked example: sizing captions on a square image
Suppose you upload a 1,200 by 1,200 pixel photo and leave the caption size at the default 9% of the image width. Each caption is drawn at 108 pixels tall, and the outline is one eighth of that, or 13.5 pixels, which keeps the letters readable over busy backgrounds.
Lines are spaced at 1.12 times the font size, about 121 pixels, and text wraps when a line would be wider than 92% of the image, which is 1,104 pixels here. The top caption is centered at 10% of the height, 120 pixels from the top, and the bottom caption at 90%, or 1,080 pixels, so two-line captions still fit inside the frame.
If you download as JPG at 90% quality, a photo of this size often comes out a few hundred kilobytes, small enough for most chat apps, while PNG keeps every pixel exact but is usually several times larger.
How the meme generator works
The image is drawn onto a canvas at its original size, up to 4,000 pixels on the longest side. Each caption is measured with the browser's text tools, split into lines that fit the width and drawn twice: first as a thick outline with rounded joins, then filled with the text color on top.
Positions are stored as fractions of the width and height, so captions stay in the same place in the downloaded file as in the preview. When you download, the tool redraws everything onto a fresh canvas and encodes it as a JPG with the quality you chose or as a lossless PNG.
Common meme mistakes
The most common mistake is writing too much. Long sentences shrink the impact and wrap into several lines that cover the picture. Keep each caption short and cut extra words.
Another mistake is using images you do not have the right to share, such as stock photos, movie stills or other people's art for commercial posts. Use your own photos or ones with clear permission, and think twice before posting pictures of people who have not agreed.
Finally, check readability at small sizes. Most memes are viewed on phones, so preview the downloaded image on a small screen and increase the font size or outline if the text becomes hard to read.
Useful tips and limitations
- Short captions read best; aim for a few words per line and let the bottom line deliver the punch.
- White text with a black outline stays readable on both light and dark parts of a photo.
- Turn off all capitals for a softer, modern caption style.
- Use the blank black square to make a text-only quote image.
Common questions
Does the Meme Generator include popular meme templates?
No. It does not bundle copyrighted meme images. Upload a photo you took or have permission to use, or start from a blank square.
What font does the Meme Generator use for captions?
It uses Anton, a bold condensed typeface bundled with the site, with Impact and other heavy fonts as fallbacks. Text is drawn with a thick outline for the classic meme look.
Does the Meme Generator add a watermark or upload my image?
No. There is no watermark, and the image and captions are combined in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
How many text boxes can I add in the Meme Generator?
Up to eight in total: the top and bottom captions plus six extra boxes you can place anywhere.
Can the Meme Generator make animated GIF memes?
No. It creates still images. An animated GIF is opened as its first frame, and the download is a single PNG or JPG.
Why is my Meme Generator image smaller than the original?
Images larger than 4,000 pixels on the longest side are scaled down to that size for editing and download to keep the browser responsive.
