How to turn a photo into a coloring page
Turn a photo into clean outlines with adjustable detail and line weight, then color it online or print it as a blank coloring page.
- Choose a photo from your phone or computer: JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF.
- Move the Detail slider: low values give big, calm areas and high values keep small features.
- Set the Line weight so the outlines are bold enough to print and color.
- Keep Add sharp outlines on for crisp edges, or turn it off for softer, simpler shapes.
- Press Color this page to color it online, or download it blank as a PNG or PDF to print.
How the photo becomes line art
The tool smooths the photo, splits it into bands of light and dark tones and draws a line wherever one band meets another. Those borders are closed shapes, which is what makes the result easy to color. Sharp outlines from an edge detector are added on top, and tiny specks are removed.
Detail sets how many tone bands are used and how much the photo is smoothed first. Line weight thickens the outlines so they survive printing.
Ideas for photo coloring pages
Pets, family portraits, a house or a favorite place make thoughtful gifts when printed on card. Teachers use photos of a class trip or a local landmark, and crafters trace outlines for embroidery or painting.
For portraits, a close crop of the face with even light works much better than a full-body shot against a busy background.
Useful tips and limitations
- Photos with one clear subject, good light and a plain background give the best line art.
- Crop the photo to the part you want before you start, so the subject fills the page.
- Raise the contrast of a dull photo in a photo editor before converting it.
- Download a blank PDF if you want to color the page with real pencils.
Common questions
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The outlines are traced by code running in your browser. The photo never leaves your device.
Why does my coloring page look busy?
Busy backgrounds and strong textures create many small areas. Lower the Detail slider or crop the photo closer to the subject.
What photo size works best?
Any photo works; large photos are scaled to 1,600 pixels on the longest side (1,200 on phones) to keep the tracing fast.
Your photo is converted to line art in this browser. It is never uploaded to ToolWorld Online or any other service, and only the traced outlines and your colors are saved on this device.
