How to test your visual memory
Visual memory is your ability to hold a picture in mind for a short time. In this game a few squares flash white on a grid; your job is to remember where they were. The pattern gets bigger and the grid wider as you level up.
- Press Start. Some squares on a 3 by 3 grid light up for about a second.
- When they go dark, tap every square that was lit, in any order.
- Find them all to move up a level: one more square lights up each time, and the grid grows to 4 by 4, 5 by 5 and beyond.
- Three wrong taps on one level cost a life and replay the level with a new pattern.
- When all three lives are gone, your highest completed level is your score.
How levels and grids grow
Level 1 lights 3 squares on a 3 by 3 grid. Every level adds one square. The grid grows to 4 by 4 at level 3, 5 by 5 at level 6, 6 by 6 at level 9 and 7 by 7 at level 13, so the pattern gets both larger and more spread out.
What's a good visual memory score?
As a rough guide to your highest completed level:
| Level reached | Rating |
|---|---|
| 15 or more | Exceptional |
| 10–14 | Above average |
| 6–9 | Typical |
| 1–5 | Warming up |
Useful tips and limitations
- Look at the whole pattern as a shape, such as an L or a zigzag, instead of remembering each square on its own.
- On large grids, split the board into quarters and remember how many squares were lit in each.
- Do not rush the first tap; a short pause to picture the pattern saves lives later.
Common questions
How many lives do I get?
Three. You lose a life when you make three wrong taps on the same level. The level then restarts with a fresh pattern.
Can I play with a keyboard?
Yes. Press Tab to move between squares and Enter to choose one, although tapping or clicking is faster.
Does the order of my taps matter in visual memory?
No. You can tap the lit squares in any order. Only the positions matter.
