Choosing a writing and editing tool
Writing and Editing tools help you polish English text before it goes to a teacher, a client or the public. They cover spelling, grammar and punctuation, sentence length and readability, the tone suggested by your word choices, and properly formatted citations for school and research papers.
For a quick final pass, the Grammar & Spell Checker highlights grammar, spelling, punctuation and style issues and lets you review each suggested edit. If you write in UK English or Spanish as well as US English, Spell Check uses dictionaries for all three and lets you keep a list of accepted words. The Readability Checker scores your text with Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid grade and Gunning Fog, while the Sentence Structure Analyzer points out long sentences and patterns that make a draft harder to follow. The Basic Tone Detector shows formal, informal, positive and negative word cues with the evidence behind each one. When your bibliography is due, the Auto-Citation Generator builds APA, MLA and Chicago author-date references.
The writing checks run locally, so your drafts stay in your browser. The citation tool can optionally look up details from a DOI, and that lookup does go online. Like any automated checker, these tools catch common patterns rather than every error, and they cannot judge meaning or context, so read suggestions critically and keep the ones that fit your intent.
