How to proofread English grammar and spelling privately
Review English grammar, dictionary spelling and prose suggestions in one local editor. Inspect highlights and apply individual edits before exporting your text.
- Paste or import up to 20,000 characters of English text. Choose a US or UK spelling dictionary.
- Optionally add session-only accepted words, skip uppercase tokens or enable the prose-style checks.
- Select Check writing and wait for the local dictionary check. Filter findings and review the highlighted passage.
- Apply one suggestion at a time, then run the check again. Copy or download the reviewed text and JSON report.
Who benefits from a private proofreading pass
Quick proofreading catches the small slips that make writing look rushed. Students check essays before submission, freelancers review client emails, and support agents tidy replies before sending. People who write in English as a second language can use the highlights to spot patterns they repeat.
The tool is useful when text should not leave your device. Grammar, punctuation and style rules run in your browser, and the spelling dictionary loads in a background worker from this site. Nothing is sent to an online writing model, which suits drafts of contracts, internal notes or unpublished work.
It works best on short to medium passages, up to 20,000 characters at a time, such as a cover letter, a blog section or a product description.
A worked example with the sample sentence
Take the sentence: i could of checked the the report. This sentnce was written very quickly. With the US dictionary and prose checks turned on, select Check writing. The lowercase i is flagged under capitalization with the suggestion I. The phrase could of is flagged under grammar with could have. The repeated the the is flagged as a possible accidental repeated word, with a single the as the fix.
The spelling check marks sentnce as a word the dictionary does not recognize and offers a dictionary suggestion, typically sentence. The prose checks may also point out was written as passive voice and very as a weak intensifier. Those are style notes rather than errors, so you decide whether to change them.
Apply one suggestion, then select Check writing again. After the fixes, the passage reads: I could have checked the report. This sentence was written very quickly.
How the checks work
Grammar findings come from a fixed set of English patterns. Examples include a modal verb followed by of, subject and verb pairs such as he are or they is, a versus an before common words, run-together forms such as alot, and phrases such as between you and I. Punctuation rules look for spaces before commas or periods, missing spaces after commas, and unmatched brackets.
Spelling compares each word with a US or UK English dictionary. You can list accepted names and terms for the current session, and you can skip words written entirely in capitals, which helps with acronyms and product codes. Findings can be filtered by spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization or style, and up to 500 findings are collected per check.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not accept every spelling suggestion blindly. The first suggestion is a close dictionary match, not a word chosen for meaning, so a typo can be replaced with the wrong real word. Check each change in context.
Avoid treating a clean result as proof of perfect writing. The rules cover common slips, not every grammar issue, and they cannot judge facts or tone. Remember that repetition, passive voice and short fragments can be deliberate. Pick the dictionary that matches your audience, because colour is correct in UK English and flagged in US English.
Useful tips and limitations
- Spelling suggestions are dictionary matches and may not fit the sentence. Names and specialist terms can be accepted manually.
- Passive voice and stylistic choices are not always errors. This tool does not guarantee that every error is found.
- Add brand names, people and technical terms to the accepted words box before checking, separated by commas, so the spelling results focus on real typos.
- Use the finding filter to clear one category at a time, starting with spelling and grammar before reviewing optional style notes.
Common questions
Does the combined grammar and spelling checker upload my text?
No. Grammar and style rules run locally and spelling uses a browser worker with dictionaries served by this site. It does not make an AI request.
Why must I check again after applying a proofreading suggestion?
An edit changes character offsets and can alter grammar context. Findings are cleared after edits to prevent applying an outdated replacement.
Can I switch between British and American spelling in the proofreader?
Yes. Choose UK English or US English for the dictionary. The grammar patterns are limited English checks rather than a complete dialect-sensitive grammar model.
Can I add my own words to the dictionary?
Yes, for the current session. Enter names or terms in the accepted words box, separated by commas or new lines, and they will not be flagged as misspellings on that check.
What kinds of grammar problems does it look for?
It checks a set of common English patterns, such as could of instead of could have, mismatched subject and verb pairs, a or an errors, repeated words, a lowercase pronoun i and some spacing and bracket problems.
Is there a limit on how many issues are shown?
Each check collects up to 500 findings, and the detailed list shows up to 100 cards at a time for the selected filter. Very long or rough drafts are easier to review in smaller sections.
