How to check spelling with local English and Spanish dictionaries

Find unknown words using US English, UK English or Spanish dictionaries. Review suggestions, replace exact occurrences and manage accepted words without uploading your text.

  1. Paste or import text and choose the matching dictionary.
  2. Set options for uppercase words, numbers and code. Add names or specialist terms to accepted words.
  3. Run Spell Check. Review each unknown word, request suggestions if needed, and replace one occurrence or all exact matches.
  4. Copy or download your edited text and report. Export accepted words if you want to keep them.

Who benefits from a private spell checker

Spelling errors are easy to miss in your own writing, especially in emails, product descriptions, school assignments and website copy. Many people also work with text they would rather not send to an outside service, such as draft contracts, internal notes or client messages.

This checker uses Hunspell-format dictionaries for English (US), English (UK) and Spanish. The dictionary files load from this site and the check runs in a background worker in your browser.

It suits writers who switch between American and British spelling, bilingual teams who also write in Spanish, and anyone who wants to review each unknown word before changing it.

Worked example with the sample text

The first sample reads: This sentnce has a few misspelled words. Please chek the adress before sending the mesage. Keep English (US) selected and choose Check spelling.

The results list four unknown words: sentnce, chek, adress and mesage, each with one occurrence. Suggestions appear for the first words automatically, and you can request them for others with Find suggestions. For a word like adress, select Replace first with address or Replace all with address.

Now try the second sample, which mentions both color and colour, and both center and centre. With English (US), colour and centre are flagged. Switch to English (UK) and check again, and color and center are flagged instead. This is a quick way to make spelling consistent for one region.

How the results work

The summary shows checked tokens, the number of unknown words and the total occurrences. An unknown word is simply a word the chosen dictionary does not contain. It does not mean the word is wrong.

Advanced options control what is checked. Words containing digits and URLs, email addresses and backtick code are ignored by default. You can also ignore words written in all capitals, which helps with acronyms. The Initial words with suggestions setting chooses whether 0, 10, 20 or 50 words get suggestions straight away.

Accept a word for this session to remove it from the results, or type names and specialist terms into Accepted words, one per line. Undo replacement reverses the last change. One check can include up to 10,000 words.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not treat a clean result as proof of correct writing. A dictionary does not understand context, so their, there and they're all pass, and so does form when you meant from. Read the text once more or use a grammar tool.

Avoid using Replace all on short words without looking at each occurrence, since a name may be spelled the same way on purpose.

Pick the right dictionary first. Checking Spanish text with an English dictionary flags almost every word, and accented words need the Spanish dictionary.

Useful tips and limitations

  • Choose the correct regional dictionary before reviewing spelling variants.
  • An unknown word can be a valid name or specialist term; a dictionary word can still be wrong in context.
  • Download your accepted words list and paste it back next time to skip product names and team names.
  • Use the filter box above the findings to jump to a specific unknown word in a long document.

Common questions

Does this spell checker send my text to a spelling service?

No. Dictionary files load from this site and checking runs in a browser worker. Your text is not sent to a spelling API.

Which spelling dictionaries can I choose?

US English, UK English and Spanish. Change the dictionary to match your text; mixed-language text may produce extra unknown words.

Will accepted spelling words be remembered next time?

They remain in the current editor session only. Download the accepted-word list if you want to keep it and paste it back into a later session.

Does Replace all change parts of other words?

No. Replacements apply only to the exact word occurrences in the current spelling result. Editing the source clears stale findings before another check.

How many words can I check at once?

Up to 10,000 words per check. Split longer documents into sections.

Can I undo a replacement?

Yes. Undo replacement restores the text before the last replacement, and you can use it several times in a row.

Are words in all capitals checked?

By default, yes. Turn on Ignore ALL-CAPS words to skip acronyms such as NASA or HTML.
