How to practise telling time and counting money
Telling time and handling money are everyday skills that children learn best by doing. Here they read the time on an analog clock, set the hands themselves, and count pesos and centavos with simple drawings of Mexican coins and bills, including how much change to expect.
- Choose Read the clock, Set the clock or Mexican money.
- Pick a level: o'clock, half hours, quarter hours, every 5 minutes or any minute.
- Read the clock and choose the right time, written as words or digits.
- In Set the clock, drag the long blue hand for minutes and the short red hand for hours, then press Check.
- In Mexican money, name a coin or bill, count a group of them, or work out the change.
Clock levels
Start with o'clock and move on one level at a time.
| Level | Example | In words |
|---|---|---|
| O'clock | 3:00 | Three o'clock |
| Half hours | 1:30 | Half past one |
| Quarter hours | 4:45 | Quarter to five |
| Every 5 minutes | 12:40 | Twenty to one |
Useful tips and limitations
- Say the time out loud the way it is said at home: «cuarto para las cinco» or «las cuatro cuarenta y cinco».
- Use Free play to build an amount, such as the price of a snack, with real-life combinations of coins.
Common questions
Are these real Mexican banknotes?
No. The coins and bills are original, simplified drawings that only share the value and a colour family with real money. They are marked PRÁCTICA and copy no real design.
Which coins and bills are included?
Coins of 50 centavos and 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 pesos, and bills of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 pesos.
How is the time said in Mexican Spanish?
Up to half past, the minutes are added: «las tres y cuarto», «las tres y media». After that it counts down to the next hour: «veinte para las cuatro», «cuarto para las cuatro».
Does the hour hand move with the minutes?
Yes, like a real clock. At 6:30 the short hand sits halfway between 6 and 7, and dragging the minute hand past 12 moves the hour.
