How to make a math worksheet with an answer key

This generator writes a fresh set of arithmetic problems in seconds. Choose a grade of primary school and a difficulty and it picks sensible number ranges, or set the operations, ranges, carrying and remainders yourself. Children can type their answers and check them on screen, and teachers can print the same problems with an answer key.

  1. Choose the grade (1º to 6º) and the difficulty: easy, medium or hard.
  2. Pick how many problems you want, from 10 to 50, and the layout: in a row or stacked in columns.
  3. Open Custom settings to choose the operations, the smallest and largest numbers, carrying and borrowing, and division with remainders.
  4. Type the answers and press Check answers: right answers turn green and wrong ones show the correct result.
  5. Add a title, choose US Letter or A4 and download the PDF: worksheet pages first, then the answer key.

What each grade practises

The grade presets follow the usual progression of primary school in Mexico. They are a starting point; you can change every setting.

GradeOperationsNumbers (medium)
1ºAddition and subtractionUp to 20, no carrying
2ºAddition and subtraction10 to 100
3ºAddition, subtraction, multiplicationUp to 999; tables to 10
4ºMultiplication and divisionTwo digits by one digit
5ºAll four operationsUp to 9 999, remainders
6ºMultiplication and divisionUp to 9 999, two-digit factors

Useful tips and limitations

  • Use Never carrying for children who are just learning column addition, then switch to Always once they are ready.
  • Copy the link to the worksheet to give every student the same problems, for example in a remote class.

Common questions

Does every worksheet come with an answer key?

Yes. The PDF always adds answer key pages after the worksheet, and on screen you can check the answers at any time.

How are divisions with remainders written?

As quotient r remainder, for example 17 ÷ 5 = 3 r 2. Turn remainders off to get only exact divisions.

Do subtraction problems ever have a negative answer?

No. The larger number always goes first, so every subtraction has an answer of zero or more.

Can I print the same worksheet again later?

Yes. Copy the link to the worksheet: it stores the worksheet number, grade, difficulty and number of problems, so it rebuilds exactly the same problems.
