How to convert Gregorian dates to Hijri dates and back
Convert between Gregorian and Hijri dates with the Umm al-Qura or tabular Islamic calendar and see today's Hijri date.
- Check today's Hijri date at the top, in English and Arabic, worked out from your device's date.
- Choose Gregorian → Hijri or Hijri → Gregorian.
- Select the calendar: Umm al-Qura (the official calendar of Saudi Arabia) or the tabular civil calendar.
- Pick the Gregorian date, or choose the Hijri day, month and year. Days that do not exist in a 29-day month are disabled.
- Read the converted date, weekday and month length, and copy the result.
When a Hijri date converter is useful
The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar of 12 months and about 354 or 355 days, used for Islamic religious dates and for official purposes in Saudi Arabia and some other countries. People convert dates to plan Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Hajj and Eid al-Adha, to fill in Saudi government and visa forms, to read Hijri dates on old documents and to work out the Hijri date of a birth or a wedding.
Because the Hijri year is 10 or 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, religious occasions move earlier each Gregorian year, which is why a converter is needed rather than a fixed table.
Worked examples
Saturday 31 October 2026 is 20 Jumada al-Ula 1448 AH in the Umm al-Qura calendar (٢٠ جمادى الأولى ١٤٤٨ هـ in Arabic). The tabular civil calendar gives 19 Jumada al-Ula, a one-day difference that is typical between the two methods.
In the Umm al-Qura calendar, 1 Ramadan 1447 fell on 18 February 2026 and 1 Shawwal 1447, the day of Eid al-Fitr in the calendar, on 20 March 2026. The Islamic new year, 1 Muharram 1448, fell on 16 June 2026. Looking ahead, 1 Ramadan 1448 is 8 February 2027 in both calendars. Muharram 1448 has 29 days, so 30 Muharram 1448 does not exist and the converter disables it.
Actual religious dates can differ: a country that waits for a local crescent sighting may begin Ramadan a day later than the calculated date.
How the conversion works
Umm al-Qura conversions use the Intl date library built into your browser, which includes the official Umm al-Qura month lengths for roughly 1300 to 1600 AH (1882 to 2174 CE). Converting a Hijri date back to Gregorian searches the few days around an arithmetic estimate for the day whose Umm al-Qura date matches.
The tabular civil option uses the standard arithmetic Islamic calendar with an epoch of Friday 16 July 622 (Julian). Odd months have 30 days and even months 29, except that Dhu al-Hijjah has 30 days in 11 leap years of every 30-year cycle (years 2, 5, 7, 10, 13, 16, 18, 21, 24, 26 and 29). Weekdays and Gregorian dates are worked out from the Julian Day Number.
Common mistakes to avoid
Treating a calculated date as the confirmed start of Ramadan or Eid is the most common mistake; confirm with your local authority. Another is assuming the Hijri day starts at midnight: traditionally it begins at sunset, so an event after sunset may be dated to the next Hijri day.
Finally, when converting very old dates, remember that the Gregorian dates here use the proleptic Gregorian calendar; historical documents before 1582, and in some countries well after, may use the Julian calendar.
Useful tips and limitations
- For Ramadan, Eid and other religious dates, follow the announcement of your local moon-sighting authority, which can differ by a day.
- Use the Arabic line when you need to write the date on a form or invitation in Arabic.
- Bookmark the page to check today's Hijri date at a glance.
- Copy the result with both the English and Arabic forms for bilingual documents.
Common questions
Why does my local mosque's date differ from this converter?
Many communities begin each month after the new crescent is sighted, which depends on weather and location. Calculated calendars, including Umm al-Qura, can therefore be one day (rarely two) away from the date observed locally.
What is the Umm al-Qura calendar?
It is the official Hijri calendar of Saudi Arabia, based on astronomical calculations for Mecca. This tool uses the Umm al-Qura data built into your browser's date library.
What is the tabular Islamic calendar?
An arithmetic calendar with months that alternate between 30 and 29 days and 11 leap years in every 30-year cycle. It is predictable but can differ from Umm al-Qura by a day or two.
How many days are in a Hijri month?
Either 29 or 30. In Umm al-Qura the length of each month is set by calculation, so there is no fixed pattern; the converter shows the length of the month you choose.
Does the Hijri Date Converter need an internet connection?
Only to load the page. The conversion runs in your browser using its built-in calendar data.
Which countries use the Umm al-Qura calendar?
Saudi Arabia uses it officially for civil purposes, and many apps and Gulf organisations follow it. Other countries often rely on local moon sighting or their own calculations for religious dates.
