How to make a jigsaw puzzle from a photo

Turn any picture into a jigsaw and solve it right in the browser. Pieces have classic tabs and blanks, and each one snaps into place and locks when you drop it close to its spot. Use one of the built-in mandala pictures or a photo from your phone or computer; the photo never leaves your device.

  1. Pick a built-in mandala, or press Use your photo and choose an image.
  2. Choose how many pieces you want, from 12 for children up to 300 for a long session.
  3. Drag pieces into the frame. A piece snaps and locks when it is close to its correct place.
  4. Turn on Edge pieces only to sort out the border first, and use the ghost image or the preview to see the finished picture.
  5. The timer stops when the last piece is placed. Press Shuffle and restart for a new cut.

How the pieces are cut

The picture is divided into a grid close to the number of pieces you chose, with rows and columns picked so that each piece is nearly square for the shape of your picture. Every shared edge between two pieces gets one curved tab with small random differences; one piece gets the tab and its neighbour gets the matching blank, so the pieces fit exactly.

Pieces are scattered over the board. When you drop a piece within about a third of a piece's width of its correct spot, it snaps into place and locks.

Piece counts and grids

For a square picture the grids are about:

PiecesGrid (square picture)Suits
123×4Young children
487×7A coffee break
10010×10An evening puzzle
30017×18A big screen and patience

Useful tips and limitations

  • Do the edge first, then group pieces by colour and fill the frame one area at a time.
  • Photos with lots of detail and different colours make better puzzles than skies or plain walls.
  • Turn the ghost image off once the edge is done for an extra challenge.

Common questions

Does my photo get uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is read and cut into pieces by your browser and stays on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.

How many pieces should I choose?

12 or 24 pieces suit young children and small screens, 48 to 100 take a few minutes to half an hour, and 200 or 300 work best on a large screen.

Can I play the jigsaw on a phone?

Yes. Drag pieces with your finger. Choose 12 to 48 pieces on small screens so pieces stay big enough to grab.

What kind of photo works best?

A sharp photo with varied colours and plenty of detail. Very large photos are scaled down to 1600 pixels on the long side to keep the puzzle smooth.

The picture is cut into pieces in your browser. Your photo is never uploaded and is gone when you close the page. Best times are saved only in this browser on this device.
