How to play Klondike solitaire

Klondike is the classic patience game. The aim is to move all 52 cards onto four foundations, one per suit, from Ace up to King. On the seven tableau columns you build down in alternating colours, such as a red 7 on a black 8, and only a King can fill an empty column.

  1. Choose Draw 1 (easier) or Draw 3 (the traditional rules), and keep Winnable deals only switched on if you want a deal that can be won.
  2. Drag a card or a run of face-up cards onto another column or a foundation, or tap a card to send it to the best legal spot.
  3. Tap the stock to turn cards onto the waste. When the stock is empty, tap it again to turn the waste back over; there is no limit on passes.
  4. Use Undo as often as you like, and Hint when you are stuck.
  5. When every card is face up, press Auto-complete and the cards fly home.

How winnable deals are found

A solver plays each candidate deal by searching through possible moves, including drawing from the stock. When it finds a full winning line, that line is replayed move by move through the same rules the game uses, and only then is the deal kept. The page picks one of these deals at random when Winnable deals only is on.

The solver gives up on very long searches, so a deal missing from the list is not proof that it is impossible. Random deals, with the option off, include some that cannot be won.

Rules at a glance

These are the Klondike rules this game follows.

WhereWhat you can place
FoundationsSame suit, from Ace up to King
TableauOne lower, opposite colour (red 6 on black 7)
Empty tableau columnA King, or a run starting with a King
StockUnlimited passes; draw 1 or draw 3

Useful tips and limitations

  • Turn over face-down cards in the tableau whenever you can: they are the cards that block you.
  • Do not rush cards onto the foundations if you still need them to hold lower cards of the other colour in the tableau.
  • Move a card back down from a foundation when you need it to hold a lower card of the other colour.

Common questions

What does Winnable deals only mean?

Those deals come from a list that a solver has already won, and each winning line was replayed through the game rules. With the option off, deals are random and some cannot be won.

What is the difference between draw 1 and draw 3?

Draw 1 turns one card at a time from the stock, so every card is reachable. Draw 3 turns three and only the top one can be played, which makes the game harder.

Can I undo as many moves as I want?

Yes. Undo goes back one move at a time all the way to the deal, including draws from the stock.

What does auto-complete do?

Once the stock and waste are empty and every tableau card is face up, the rest of the game is just moving cards home. Auto-complete does that for you.
