How to practice logical reasoning questions

Logical reasoning questions appear in job aptitude tests, school entrance exams and brain-teaser books. This practice test mixes four common types and generates new questions every time, so you never run out of material.

  1. Press Start the test to begin the 15-minute timer.
  2. For number series, find the rule that links each number to the next and work out the next term.
  3. For odd one out, find the property that four numbers share and the fifth does not.
  4. For syllogisms, accept both statements as true, even with made-up words, and choose the only conclusion that must follow.
  5. For analogies, find the rule in the examples and apply it to the last item. Then review your score, percentile and strongest area.

The four question types

Number series follow rules such as adding the same amount, doubling, squares or adding the two previous numbers. Odd one out asks which number lacks a property the others share, such as being even, prime, a multiple of 3 or 5, or a perfect square; the generator rejects any set where a different number could also be the odd one.

Syllogisms give two statements about made-up groups and four conclusions; only one must be true whenever both statements are true. Analogies show a rule with two examples, using numbers or letters, and ask you to apply it.

What's a good logical reasoning score?

Scores depend on practice with the question types. As a guide for this 20-question test:

Score (of 20)Rating
18–20Excellent
14–17Good
9–13Average
0–8Keep practicing

Useful tips and limitations

  • Write down the differences between numbers in a series; a pattern in the differences often reveals the rule.
  • In syllogisms, ignore what sounds likely and test each conclusion: could it be false while both statements are true?
  • After the test, look at which area you missed most and practice that type next time.

Common questions

Why do the syllogisms use made-up words?

Words like glorps and fendles stop general knowledge from helping or misleading you. Only the logic of the two statements decides the answer.

Are these the same questions used in real aptitude tests?

No. Every question is generated by our own code or written by us. The question types are similar to many aptitude tests, so it is good practice for the format.

Is this logical reasoning test good preparation for job tests?

It is useful practice for the question styles many employers and schools use, especially number series and syllogisms. Each real test has its own format and time limits.

How is my logical reasoning percentile estimated?

Your weighted score is compared with a typical score for this test, assuming most people land near the middle. It is an estimate for practice, not a published norm.
