How to practice verbal reasoning
Verbal reasoning tests how well you understand words and the relationships between them. This test uses three question types and two original word lists: one written in English and another written directly in Spanish, so neither version is a translation.
- Press Start the test. You have 12 minutes for 20 questions.
- For synonyms, choose the word closest in meaning to the word in quotes.
- For opposites, choose the word that means the reverse.
- For analogies, work out how the first pair of words is related and choose the word that completes the second pair in the same way.
- Review your score, percentile and strongest area, then retake for a new set of words.
How the questions are chosen
Each test draws seven synonym questions, seven opposite questions and six analogy questions from a word bank, and shuffles the answer options. Analogies are worth 2 points because they require you to identify a relationship as well as know the words.
The English and Spanish banks were written separately, with distractors chosen so that only one option fits the question.
What's a good verbal reasoning score?
As a guide for this 20-question test:
| Score (of 20) | Rating |
|---|---|
| 18–20 | Excellent |
| 15–17 | Good |
| 10–14 | Average |
| 0–9 | Keep practicing |
Useful tips and limitations
- For analogies, say the relationship as a sentence, such as 'a bee lives in a hive', then test each option in the same sentence.
- Rule out options that are related to the word but not in the way the question asks, such as a synonym in an opposites question.
- Read all four options before choosing; the first word that seems related is often a trap.
Common questions
Is the Spanish verbal test a translation of the English one?
No. The Spanish page has its own word list, written for Spanish speakers, with words and analogies that work naturally in Spanish.
Will the verbal test improve my vocabulary?
Regular practice helps you notice shades of meaning, and missed questions show words worth looking up. Reading widely is still the best way to grow your vocabulary.
How long does the verbal reasoning test take?
Up to 12 minutes. Most people finish in 6 to 10 minutes.
Does the verbal test work for non-native speakers?
Yes, as practice. Keep in mind that the score reflects vocabulary in the page language, so it will usually be lower in a second language.
