How to create organic shapes for your designs
Create seeded organic shapes with editable contours, gradients, outlines and layers. Download a vector SVG or export PNG, JPG or WebP in your browser.
- Choose a preset or Random shape. Keep the seed number if you want to reproduce the contour.
- Adjust control points, irregularity and smoothness, then rotate or flip the shape.
- Choose fill colors, gradients, outlines, shadows, opacity and up to five layers.
- Set export dimensions and a download format. Use a transparent format or choose a JPG matte, then download or copy SVG.
Where organic shapes fit in real projects
Soft, irregular blobs are a quick way to add depth behind a product photo, frame a headshot on a landing page or break up a plain slide background. Because the shape is drawn from numbers, you can make a matching set for a whole site by changing only the seed.
Designers use them as section dividers and background accents. Marketers drop them behind social graphics. Developers who need a decorative SVG without opening a drawing app can tune one here, copy the markup and paste it straight into a component.
Worked example: a two-layer hero accent
Start from the defaults: seed 42, 8 control points, irregularity 55, smoothness 85, and a gradient from #6366f1 to #ec4899 on a transparent 1200 by 1200 canvas. Set Layers to 2. The second layer reuses the same seed with an offset, is rotated 12 degrees further, is scaled to 89 percent of the first, and has 13 percent less opacity, which creates a soft echo inside the main blob.
Choose PNG and download. You get organic-shape.png at exactly 1200 by 1200 pixels with a transparent background. Choose SVG instead and you get organic-shape.svg containing two path elements and a linear gradient, which stays sharp at any size.
Type 42 into the seed box on another day and keep the other settings the same, and the contour comes back identical.
How the shape is built
The engine works on a 1000 by 1000 grid. It spaces the control points evenly around a circle with a radius of 350 units, then pulls each point inward by a seeded random amount. At irregularity 0 every point sits on the circle. At 100 a point can move in by 10 to 70 percent of the radius.
Smoothness sets how far the curve handles reach between neighboring points, from 0 up to a tension of 0.18. At 0 the handles collapse and you get a straight-edged polygon, which is what the Faceted preset uses. Higher values give rounder, more fluid edges. The presets are quick starting points: Soft blob uses 8 points, Pebble 5, Splash 16 and Faceted 9.
Rotation runs from minus 180 to 180 degrees, the outline can be up to 30 units wide, and the soft shadow adds a gentle drop shadow below the shape.
Common mistakes to avoid
Saving only the seed is not enough to rebuild a design. The seed fixes the random offsets, but the point count, irregularity and smoothness change the outline too, and colors, layers and rotation sit on top. Note every value you changed.
Also check your export size. Each side must be between 64 and 4,096 pixels, with no more than 12 million pixels in total. The shape is drawn on a square grid, so a wide export such as 1920 by 1080 keeps the blob centered with empty space at the sides. Finally, JPG cannot store transparency and will fill the background with the matte color.
Useful tips and limitations
- SVG keeps editable vector paths; raster formats have the selected pixel dimensions.
- The seed controls geometry. Save the other settings too when you need to reproduce the entire design.
- Lower the opacity to around 20 to 40 percent when a shape sits behind text, so the copy stays easy to read.
- Try the Splash preset with smoothness near 100 for a liquid look, or Pebble with low irregularity for a calm, nearly round accent.
Common questions
Does the organic shapes generator produce actual vector SVG?
Yes. SVG export contains vector paths, optional gradients and shadows, without embedded bitmap images.
Can an organic shape have a transparent background?
Yes. Enable transparency and use SVG, PNG or WebP. JPG is flattened onto the selected background color.
How can I reproduce the same organic blob later?
Use the same seed, control-point count, irregularity and smoothness. Colors, transforms and layers are separate settings.
How many control points can a shape have?
Between 3 and 24. Fewer points give simple, rounded forms, while more points allow wavier and more detailed outlines.
Does changing the color change the shape?
No. Colors, gradient, outline, shadow and opacity only affect how the path is painted. The outline itself depends on the seed, point count, irregularity and smoothness.
Can I control quality for JPG and WebP exports?
Yes. When JPG or WebP is selected, an image quality slider from 10 to 100 percent appears. PNG and SVG do not use it.
