How to convert PDF pages to JPG images
Render the pages of a PDF as JPG pictures you can post, paste into slides or send in a chat. Choose which pages and how sharp the images should be.
- Choose the PDF. Only the first file is converted unless you tick the option to convert every chosen PDF.
- Leave Pages / ranges blank for every page, or enter pages such as 1,3,5-7. Select Inspect to tick pages on thumbnails instead.
- Set the JPG resolution from 72 to 240 DPI. 144 DPI is the starting value.
- Select Process & download. One page downloads as a JPG; several pages download as a ZIP.
- Open an image at full size to check that small text is readable.
When to convert a PDF to JPG
Many places accept pictures but not PDFs. Social posts, chat apps, some website builders and presentation slides all handle JPG images more easily than documents. Converting a flyer, certificate, chart or single page of a report to JPG lets you share it anywhere an image is accepted.
Images are also handy for previews. A thumbnail of a cover page on a web page or in an online shop listing loads faster than a PDF, and a picture of one page is often all someone needs to see.
Think about where the image will end up before you pick a resolution. A chat preview or a slide needs far fewer pixels than a printed handout, and a smaller image uploads faster and is easier for the person receiving it to open on a phone.
Worked example: pages from a Letter-size report
Suppose report.pdf has 12 Letter-size pages, 612 by 792 points each, and you type 1,7 in Pages / ranges at the default 144 DPI. Each page is drawn at 144 / 72 = 2 times its point size, so it becomes 1224 by 1584 pixels, just under 1.94 megapixels. The download is pdf-pages.zip containing 01-report-page-1.jpg, 01-report-page-7.jpg and a processing-report.json file.
At 240 DPI the same page becomes 2040 by 2640 pixels, about 5.39 megapixels. An A4 page at 144 DPI rounds up to 1191 by 1684 pixels. A 24 by 36 inch poster page is limited by the 16-megapixel cap: 136 DPI gives 3264 by 4896 pixels and works, while 137 DPI would exceed the cap and asks you to lower the resolution.
How the conversion works
The PDF is opened with the PDF.js rendering engine, which loads from this website when needed. Each selected page is drawn onto a canvas with a white background at the chosen resolution, then saved as a JPEG at 90% quality. Pixel size equals the page size in points multiplied by DPI divided by 72, rounded up.
Annotations are not rendered, so comments, sticky notes and filled form values do not appear in the images. When there is one image it downloads on its own. With several images, they are packed into an uncompressed ZIP together with a short report, and the combined export is limited to 100 MB. Nothing leaves your browser.
Common mistakes to avoid
Choosing a very high resolution for many pages is the usual problem. Each 240 DPI Letter page is over 5 megapixels, so a long document can make a large ZIP and take a while on a phone. Convert only the pages you need, or lower the DPI.
Remember that JPG has no transparency or text layer. The images cannot be searched or edited as text, so use PDF to Word when you need the words. Encrypted PDFs need their opening password, and PDFs longer than 200 pages are not accepted, so split very long files first.
Useful tips and limitations
- Use 72 to 96 DPI for quick previews and chat messages, and 200 to 240 DPI when the image will be printed or zoomed.
- File names keep the real page number, such as 01-report-page-7.jpg, so pages stay easy to identify.
- Inspect shows thumbnails of the first 30 pages; any page can still be chosen by number.
- For crisp text on a high-density phone screen, 144 DPI or higher usually looks better than 96 DPI.
Common questions
What resolution does PDF to JPG use?
You choose from 72 to 240 DPI, starting at 144 DPI. A Letter page at 144 DPI becomes 1224 by 1584 pixels.
Can PDF to JPG convert just one page?
Yes. Type that page number in Pages / ranges, or tick it on the thumbnails after Inspect. A single page downloads as one JPG file.
Does PDF to JPG show comments and filled form fields?
No. Pages are rendered without annotations, so comments, highlights added as annotations and filled form field values are not drawn in the images.
Is PDF to JPG free to use without an account?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no signup, and your PDF is not uploaded.
Why did PDF to JPG ask me to lower the resolution?
A rendered page would be larger than 16 megapixels. Large-format pages such as posters need a lower DPI to stay under that limit.
Can PDF to JPG convert pages from several PDFs at once?
Yes. Choose up to 20 PDFs and tick the option to convert every chosen PDF. Images from each file get a numbered prefix such as 01- and 02- inside the ZIP.
