How to convert JPG images to a PDF document
Put one or more photos or scans into a single PDF, one image per page, in the order you choose. Pick A4, Letter or pages sized to each image.
- Choose up to 20 JPG, JPEG or PNG images in one go, 30 MB combined. Choosing again replaces the list.
- Put the images in page order with Up, Down or drag and drop.
- Pick the paper: A4, Letter, or Match image at selected DPI. For Match image, set the DPI from 72 to 240.
- Optionally change the output filename, then select Process & download.
- Open the PDF and check that every page is the right way up and in the right order.
When to turn images into a PDF
Many offices and websites ask for documents as a PDF even when you only have photos of them. A rental application may want a photographed ID and pay slips, a teacher may want homework pages photographed on a phone and a claims form may want pictures of receipts. Combining the images into one PDF keeps them together, in order, in a format every reader can open.
A PDF is also easier to print at a predictable size. Choosing A4 or Letter means each image prints on one sheet with a small margin instead of being cropped or stretched by a photo printing dialog.
Worked example: a landscape photo on A4
Suppose you add a 4000 by 3000 pixel landscape photo and choose A4. An A4 page is 595.28 by 841.89 points, and the image must fit inside a 10-point margin on each side, leaving 575.28 by 821.89 points. The scale is the smaller of 575.28 / 4000 = 0.14382 and 821.89 / 3000 = 0.27396, so the photo is drawn at 575.28 by 431.46 points, about 8 by 6 inches, centered with 205.2 points of space above and below.
If you choose Match image at selected DPI with 144 DPI instead, the page becomes 4000 / 144 x 72 = 2000 by 1500 points. The image is then fitted inside 1980 by 1480 points, so it is drawn at 1973.3 by 1480 points. Three such images produce a 3-page PDF, and the status reads Created 3-page PDF.
How the conversion works
The pdf-lib library builds the PDF in your browser. It creates an empty document and, for each image in list order, adds a page of the chosen size, embeds the image and draws it centered at the largest size that fits inside the margin. Small images are scaled up to fill that space, so a very small picture may look soft when printed.
JPG files are embedded byte for byte, which means the PDF is roughly the size of the photos combined. PNG files are decoded and stored with lossless compression, and transparency is kept. The finished PDF is loaded once more to confirm it has pages before the download starts. Nothing is sent to a server.
Common mistakes to avoid
Phone photos sometimes store their rotation as an orientation tag instead of in the pixels. The image is placed exactly as its pixels are stored, so such a photo can appear sideways in the PDF. If that happens, rotate the photo in an editor and save it again, or fix the page later with PDF Page Organizer.
Other common slips are choosing images in two batches, which replaces the list, and adding formats other than JPG or PNG, which are rejected. Large photos make large PDFs, so if the result is too big for an upload limit, shrink the photos with Resize Image first or run the PDF through Compress PDF.
Useful tips and limitations
- Photos taken in portrait or landscape keep their shape: each image is scaled to fit the page with a 10-point margin and centered.
- JPG files are placed in the PDF without being re-encoded, so no extra quality is lost.
- Crop photos of paper documents to the page edges before converting so the PDF looks like a scan rather than a desk photo.
- Use Match image when you want each page to keep the exact shape of its picture, such as for panoramas or slides.
Common questions
Does JPG to PDF reduce the quality of my photos?
No. JPG images are embedded as they are, without re-encoding. PNG images are stored losslessly. Each image is only scaled for display on the page.
What page sizes does JPG to PDF offer?
A4 (595 by 842 points), US Letter (612 by 792 points) or Match image, where the page size comes from the image pixels and the DPI you choose.
How many images can JPG to PDF combine into one file?
Up to 20 images with a combined size of 30 MB. Each image can be up to 24 megapixels and becomes one page.
Why is a photo sideways in the PDF made by JPG to PDF?
The photo probably stores its rotation as an orientation tag. The tool places the pixels as stored, so rotate and re-save the image, or rotate that page afterward with PDF Page Organizer.
Can JPG to PDF convert PNG screenshots too?
Yes. PNG images are accepted alongside JPG and JPEG files, and their transparency is kept in the PDF.
Does JPG to PDF put several images on one page?
No. Each image becomes its own page. Use the Image Collage Maker first if you want several pictures on one page.
