How to convert a text PDF into an editable Word document

Create editable Word text with photos and styling, or preserve PDF pages as high-quality images. Preview and download DOCX locally without uploading files.

  1. Choose or drop an unlocked PDF under 30 MB. Editable mode requires selectable text; appearance mode also works with scanned pages.
  2. Choose Editable Word for styled text and photos, or Match PDF appearance for page images. Select up to 100 pages with ranges such as 1-3, 5.
  3. Choose Convert to Word and wait for processing. Review the content or page preview and any warnings about missing text.
  4. Download Word DOCX and review it. Editable mode offers page-break control; appearance mode keeps each PDF page as an image on its own Word page.

Situations where converting PDF to Word helps

PDF is great for sharing a finished document, but it is awkward to edit. Converting to DOCX helps when you need to update an old contract template, reuse paragraphs from a report, fix a typo in a flyer when the original file is lost, or pull text from a policy document into your own notes.

The second style serves a different need. If you must place a PDF inside a Word file exactly as it looks, such as a signed form, a chart-heavy page or a scanned letter, the appearance style keeps each page as a picture so nothing shifts.

Worked example: converting part of a 12-page report

Say you have a 12-page text-based PDF and only need the introduction and one appendix page. Type 5, 1-3 in the pages box. The tool removes duplicates and sorts the list, so it converts pages 1, 2, 3 and 5, in that order, as four pages of output. A reversed range such as 3-1, or a page number above 12, produces an error instead of a guess.

Suppose page 5 turns out to be a scanned image. In editable mode the status line reads that there is no selectable text on page 5 and that it may need OCR, while pages 1 to 3 convert normally. If none of the selected pages have text, editable mode stops and suggests the appearance style.

In appearance mode, each page is rendered as a JPEG image at up to twice its original size, capped at about 8 megapixels. A US Letter page measures 612 by 792 points, so it is rendered at about 1,224 by 1,584 pixels.

How the editable conversion rebuilds a page

A PDF stores positioned pieces of text rather than paragraphs. Editable mode groups those pieces into lines, keeps font styles and text colors where the file provides them, and extracts embedded photos. It then writes a DOCX file you can open in Word or a compatible editor.

By default each PDF page starts on a new Word page. Untick that option for continuous text that is easier to edit as one flowing document. The preview shows the extracted content first, so you can check it before downloading.

Embedded photos are placed into the document alongside the rebuilt text, and the content preview lists pages so you can spot a missing image or blank page early. The original PDF is read in your browser and is not changed by the conversion.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not expect editable mode to recreate complex layouts perfectly. Multi-column pages, tables and overlapping graphics are rebuilt as lines of text, so check them carefully. Do not upload a password-protected file either; unlock a copy first, or the tool reports that the PDF is protected.

Watch the limits. Files must be under 30 MB, the source PDF can have up to 500 pages, and each conversion handles up to 100 selected pages. Very large picture pages can also exceed the 60 MB image total, so convert long documents in smaller ranges.

Useful tips and limitations

  • Editable mode reconstructs text, available font styles and colors, spacing and photos. Tables, columns and overlapping artwork may differ; appearance mode preserves their visual design.
  • Appearance mode preserves scanned pages but its text is not directly editable. Use OCR for editable scanned text.
  • Convert one representative page first to see how the layout comes out before processing a long range.
  • Use editable mode with page breaks turned off when you plan to copy long passages into another document.

Common questions

Does this PDF to Word converter preserve an exact PDF layout?

Editable mode approximates the layout with styled text and photos. Choose Match PDF appearance to keep the full design as page images inside Word; their text is not directly editable.

Why does my PDF to Word result have pages without text?

Scanned pages do not contain selectable text. Editable mode flags them and does not perform OCR. Appearance mode can preserve the scanned page as an image.

Is converting a PDF to DOCX private?

Yes. Extraction and DOCX creation happen in your browser. Your PDF is not uploaded to ToolWorld Online.

Can I convert pages out of order?

No. Pages are always converted in ascending order, so entering 5, 1-3 produces pages 1, 2, 3 and 5.

Why is the page-break option disabled?

In Match PDF appearance mode each PDF page is always placed on its own Word page, so the option only applies to editable mode.

Is there a page limit for the source PDF?

Yes. The PDF can have up to 500 pages, and you can convert up to 100 selected pages at a time.
