How to practise early reading and writing

Learning to read in Spanish usually starts with syllables: ma, me, mi, mo, mu. These activities let a child hear each syllable, build familiar words from them, find a missing letter and write words from a spoken dictation. An English mode uses word families such as cat, hat and bat.

  1. Choose the exercise language: Spanish (Mexico) or English.
  2. In Syllables, pick a consonant and tap each syllable to hear it, then tap the example words.
  3. In Build the word, look at the picture and tap the syllables in order.
  4. In Missing letter and Match, choose the right letter or join each picture with its word.
  5. In Dictation, press Hear the word, write it and press Check.

A simple order for the activities

Most children move from hearing to building to writing. Spend a few days on each step before moving on.

StepActivityThe child can…
1SyllablesHear and repeat ma, me, mi, mo, mu
2Build the wordJoin syllables into a word
3Missing letter and MatchRead short words
4DictationWrite words they hear

Useful tips and limitations

  • Say the syllables out loud together with the child before using the screen.
  • If your device has no voice, read the dictation words yourself; the activity still checks the spelling.

Common questions

Which voice reads the words?

The voice installed on your device. The page asks for a Mexican Spanish voice (es-MX) first and uses another Spanish voice if there is none.

Do written accents count in the dictation?

Yes. «lápiz» and «lapiz» are different words in Spanish, so an accent mark that is missing counts as a mistake.

What age is it for?

It suits preschool and first and second grade, roughly ages 4 to 7, or any beginner reader.

Why are ca, co, cu and que, qui shown apart?

In Spanish the letter c sounds like k only before a, o and u; before e and i the k sound is written qu. Showing them apart avoids spelling mistakes later.
