How to make handwriting tracing worksheets

Tracing sheets help children learn the shape and direction of each letter before writing on their own. This maker draws four writing lines, a dark model letter and light grey letters to trace, using real font outlines so the letters print sharp at any size.

  1. Choose the sheet: alphabet, numbers 0 to 10, your own words or pre-writing strokes.
  2. Pick the letter style (print or cursive), uppercase or lowercase, and the Spanish alphabet with Ñ or the English one.
  3. Choose the size: large for preschool, medium for first and second grade, small from third grade.
  4. For words, type up to 12 lines, such as the child's name or a short sentence.
  5. Check the preview and download the PDF in US Letter or A4.

Which size to choose

The size sets the height of small letters such as a, m and o.

SizeSmall-letter heightSuits
LargeAbout 8.5 mmPreschool
MediumAbout 6 mm1º and 2º
SmallAbout 4 mm3º and up

Useful tips and limitations

  • Print at actual size (100 %) so the lines keep their spacing.
  • Before letters, let preschoolers trace zigzags, waves and loops: they practise the same hand movements.

Common questions

Does the alphabet include Ñ?

Yes. The Spanish alphabet has 27 letters including Ñ. Choose English to get the 26-letter alphabet.

What do the four lines mean?

The top line marks tall letters such as l and b, the dashed line marks the height of small letters, the red line is the baseline and the bottom line is for letters that go down, such as p and g.

Which fonts are used?

Print letters use the Poppins typeface and cursive uses the Pacifico script typeface, both under the SIL Open Font License and loaded only on this page.

Can I make a sheet with my students' names?

Yes. Choose My words or sentences and type one name per line; each name becomes a row to trace with a blank row under it.
