How to practise reading comprehension
Each grade has five short readings of different kinds: stories, informational texts, instructions, a letter, an interview, a diary and an opinion text. After reading, children answer questions that ask for information in the text, for an idea they have to infer, and for the meaning of a word. Every answer comes with a short explanation.
- Choose the language and the grade, from 1º to 6º.
- Open a reading. Read it, or press Read aloud to listen.
- Answer each question; the right answer and an explanation appear after each choice.
- See your score at the end. Finished readings show a check mark in the list.
- Download the reading as a PDF with questions and an answer key to work on paper.
Readings by grade
Texts get longer and the questions more demanding from grade to grade.
| Grade | Length | Kinds of text |
|---|---|---|
| 1º–2º | About 40 to 90 words | Stories, a letter, an informational text |
| 3º–4º | About 80 to 110 words | Informational texts, stories, instructions, an interview, a made-up legend |
| 5º–6º | About 100 to 130 words | Informational texts, instructions, a story, an opinion text, a diary |
Useful tips and limitations
- Ask children to underline the sentence that answers each literal question; it shows them how to look back in the text.
- For inferential questions, ask “How do you know?” and let them explain with their own words.
Common questions
Who wrote the readings?
All 30 readings and their questions are original and were written for this site. Informational texts use well-known, general facts.
What do literal, inferential and vocabulary mean?
A literal question is answered with information written in the text. An inferential one needs a conclusion from clues. A vocabulary question asks what a word means in context.
Can I print the readings for my class?
Yes. Each reading downloads as a PDF with a name line, the questions, a space to summarize and an answer key page.
Are the English versions the same texts?
Yes. Each reading has a Spanish and an English version with the same questions, so it also works for bilingual practice.
