How to practise spelling rules

Many Spanish spelling mistakes come from letters that sound the same, such as b and v or c, s and z, and from the written accent. Each set here shows the rules first and then asks ten quick questions with an explanation after every answer. An English set practises homophones such as their, there and they're.

  1. Choose a set: B and V, C S and Z, G and J, H, LL and Y, Accents or English homophones.
  2. Read the rules at the top; you can fold them away once you know them.
  3. Choose the missing letter, the kind of word or the correct spelling for each item.
  4. Read the explanation after each answer and press Next.
  5. At the end, review your mistakes or download the same ten items as a printable worksheet with answers.

Useful tips and limitations

  • Ask children to say the rule out loud before answering; saying it helps them remember it.
  • For accents, first find the stressed syllable by clapping the word, then apply the rule.

Common questions

What are agudas, llanas and esdrújulas?

They are Spanish words stressed on the last syllable (aguda), the second to last (llana or grave) or the third to last (esdrújula). Each group has its own rule for the written accent.

When does an aguda word take a written accent?

When it ends in n, s or a vowel: canción, compás, café. Reloj and papel do not.

Are the rules always true?

They are the common rules taught in primary school. Spanish has exceptions, especially with b, v and h, so the items use words that follow the rule or that are worth learning by heart.

Can I print the exercises?

Yes. Download the ten items on screen as a PDF with the rules, the exercises and an answer key page.
