How to make a rubric or a checklist
A rubric describes what each level of performance looks like for every criterion, and a checklist lists what a piece of work must include. Both make assessment clearer for students and quicker for teachers. Start from a template, adjust it, score your students and get their percent and grade on the Mexican 5 to 10 scale.
- Choose a template: oral presentation, community project, written text, teamwork or a notebook checklist.
- Edit the title, the levels and their points, the criteria, their weights and the descriptors.
- Type your students, one per line, and choose a level for each criterion.
- Read each student's percent and grade from 5 to 10.
- Download the rubric and results as a PDF, or the scores as a CSV for Excel or Google Sheets.
A worked example
An oral presentation rubric has five criteria with four levels worth 4, 3, 2 and 1 points. The first criterion has weight 2 and the rest weight 1, for a total weight of 6.
| Criterion | Weight | Level | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Knowledge of the topic | 2 | Excellent (4) | 2 × 4/4 = 2 |
| Organization | 1 | Good (3) | 0.75 |
| Voice and body language | 1 | Good (3) | 0.75 |
| Visual support | 1 | Fair (2) | 0.5 |
| Time | 1 | Excellent (4) | 1 |
| Total | 6 | — | 5 ÷ 6 = 83.3 % → 8.3 |
Useful tips and limitations
- Share the rubric with students before the task so they know what is expected.
- Give more weight to the criteria that matter most, for example 2 for content and 1 for presentation.
Common questions
How is the grade calculated?
Each criterion adds its weight times the points of the chosen level divided by the top points. The total is shown as a percent, and the grade is the percent divided by 10, never below 5.
What is the difference between a rubric and a checklist?
A rubric has several levels with a description for each one. A checklist only records whether each item is present (yes or no).
Can I open the scores in Excel?
Yes. The CSV file has one row per student with the level of each criterion, the points, the percent and the grade, and opens in Excel and Google Sheets.
Is my rubric saved?
The rubric, the class list and the scores are saved only in this browser on this device.
Everything runs in your browser. Answers, progress and saved lists stay only in this browser on this device; nothing is uploaded and no account is needed. Clearing site data removes them.
