How to pick students and make teams
Choosing who answers, forming teams and planning seats are small classroom jobs that take time and can feel unfair. This tool keeps your class list in the browser, picks names so nobody repeats until everyone has had a turn, makes teams whose sizes differ by at most one, and lets you move students around a seating chart.
- Type or paste your class list, one name per line. It is saved in this browser.
- In Random picker, press the button or the Space bar to pick the next student.
- In Teams, choose a number of teams or a team size, add pairs to keep apart or together, and press Make teams.
- In Seating chart, set rows and columns, press Random seats and drag or tap to swap students.
- Press Full screen to show the picker or the teams on the projector.
How names are picked
Each round starts with the whole list. Every pick removes that student from the round, so in a class of 30 everyone is called once in 30 picks. When the round ends a new one starts automatically. Names you add in the middle of a round join it straight away.
Useful tips and limitations
- Write keep-apart pairs as «Ana - Luis», one pair per line.
- Pair the picker with the countdown timer to give each student a fixed time to answer.
Common questions
Can the same student be picked twice in a row?
No. Nobody is picked again until everyone in the list has had a turn, and the last student of one round is never the first of the next.
Are the teams balanced?
Team sizes differ by at most one person. Keep-together pairs go in the same team and keep-apart pairs are placed in different teams whenever the sizes allow it.
Where is my class list stored?
Only in this browser on this device. It is not uploaded; on another computer you would need to paste it again.
Can I print the teams or the seating chart?
Download the teams as a CSV for Excel or Google Sheets, or print the seating chart from the browser.
Everything runs in your browser. Answers, progress and saved lists stay only in this browser on this device; nothing is uploaded and no account is needed. Clearing site data removes them.
